In 1999, the Federal Government put forward "An ITS Plan for Canada; En Route to Intelligent Mobility". This document identifies that an "ITS Architecture for Canada" will provide a strong communications and information backbone that unites key ITS technologies, enabling them to communicate with each other. This Architecture will also provide a framework that identifies the standards needed to support interoperability across technologies, modes, and jurisdictions. Using the ITS Architecture that was completed and launched in 2000, a physical ITS architecture is being developed for the City of Calgary. Using the City of Calgary as a case study, this paper will introduce the concept of a Regional Architecture as the tool to take transportation policy and objectives to project implementation with the specific application in a medium sized city. This paper will also outline the steps taken in the development of the Regional Architecture including mapping existing systems to the ITS Architecture for Canada, identifying and tailoring market packages to future needs, and developing architecture flows and regional interconnects.
