A new navigation system has been developed that presents road maps and landforms in three-dimensional images created with computer graphics. In the initial system which displayed maps in a bird's-eye view, map data were described in two-dimensional coordinates and projected perspectively onto a screen so that a pseudo three-dimensional effect was produced. The newest three-dimensional bird's-eye view navigation system makes use of altitude data to model three-dimensional figures of objects to be displayed so as to present map images that more closely approximate real scenery. After the initial system was released, an improved version was developed that displays the area around the vehicle in approximately a plan view, while retaining perspective projection. The latest system, in contrast, excludes the symbolic properties of map displays and improves and enriches the displayed contents. It represents an innovative car navigation system for more comfortable and enjoyable motoring.
