The Injury Severity Score (ISS) has been revised. The purpose of this scientific paper/poster is to describe the newly developed Revised Injury Severity Score (RISS) and to compare RISS to the ISS and the New Injury Severity Score (NISS)3 with respect to characterizing trauma severity in patients sustaining multiple penetrating and blunt injuries. RISS is easy to derive and, using an analytical study approach, RISS demonstrated both significantly improved positive correlation (best fit linear) to trauma patient severity (RISS R2 = 0.98 and 0.99 (best fit polynomial); NISS R2 = 0.93; ISS R2 = 0.88) and non-decreasing monotonicity compared to ISS/NISS, across the entire range of scoring system values and for all possible trauma patient combination injury severity levels. We recommend that trauma researchers and clinicians use RISS rather than ISS or NISS to characterize the multiple-injured trauma patient. (Author/publisher)
