This paper describes the methodological development of protocols for an Australian road assessment program (AusRAP). AusRAP extends the EuroRAP (European Road Assessment Program) philosophy to mapping death and serious injury on Australian roads, to see where risk is high and where it is low, and how well the user is protected when a crash does occur. The aims of the AusRAP rating system are to present an independent, strategic view of the safety performance of interurban strategic roads to Government, and to provide road users with easy to understand information about the comparative risks of being involved in a crash involving fatal or serious injuries. There are significant differences between the European and Australian road environments and patterns of road use, which requires a different set of assessment protocols. This paper describes the methodological development of the program for the Australian environment. (Author/publisher) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E208431.
