Devon was one of the first British highway authorities to introduce traffic calming measures in the mid 1980's. A number of schemes were implemented, in different situations, and this resulted in significant public interest and requests for many more locations to be treated. As a consequence, the County Council published, in 1991, itsTraffic Calming Guidelines (see IRRD 839774), which set down examples and experiences from Devon, elsewhere in Britain, and Europe. Theaim of the guidelines is to identify the issues to be taken into account when considering the possibility of developing a traffic calming scheme, and to provide a resource of possible calming techniques and environmentally sensitive designs. In this paper the framework of Devon's Traffic Calming Guidelines are discussed and experience ofthe schemes implemented during the past year presented. These include village gateways, and calming schemes in urban residential areas.Recent monitoring information on the impact of schemes will be provided, together with an accent on visual presentation.
