Samenvatting

A new user interface for the TRARR simulation model has been developed and applied to a typical two-lane highway in order to design and assess the effectiveness of a variety of passing lane configurations. Primary attention was given to providing an input/output interface to the model, including such features as graphic-based input screens, validity checking, use of metric or imperial units, context-sensitive help, and enhanced output. The model was applied both before and after the interface development. The initial application was directed toward providing guidance in the design of a new alignment with passing lanes, and providing insights in determining needed model improvements and associated model improvements and associated priorities. Application of the model with the newly developed user interface provided means of assuring that the enhanced features were operating satisfactorily and that the integrity of the entire model had not been disturbed. In the process of applying the enhanced model, insights were gained as to a search process for optimising passing lane design. (A)
