This article describes the content of the British driving test, and discusses some significant changes in legislation affecting driver testing and training both in Great Britain and the EEC. The mandatory retesting using a new double length driving test of persons convicted of dangerous driving is of particular relevance. The content of this test is briefly reviewed. The role of the Driving Standards Agency in driver safety education, and in driving instructor training and supervision is also discussed briefly. The improvement in the motorcycle casualty rate since the introduction of the mandatory course of basic tuition is noted.
