After high- pressure gas discharge lamps have been switched off, they need a cooling- down period before they can be switched on again. In many lighting installations, it is essential that a hot lamp can be switched on again immediately, e.g. after a power failure. The introduction of metal- halide lamps prompted the start of a series of investigations into the re-starting characteristics of these lamps.
