In a systematic study of environmental traffic signals with various display systems, their acceptance by the driver, their benefits and their potential reductions of emissions and fuel consumption, were investigated. It was shown that acceptance (18- 36% of waiting drivers) largely depends on queue position and the length of waiting time, and that it was somewhat higher in the case of simpler display systems than in the case of digital display indicating the remaining time at "red".
