Samenvatting

Direction signs at or near traffic junctions. Despite the fact that various parties and organisations in the Netherlands are working hard to improve public transport and optimise chain mobility, the uniformity of direction signing systems usually leaves much to be desired in terms of static and dynamic travel information at or near traffic junctions. Design, the amount of information offered and the location of signs and information columns differ from one place to another. Travellers unfamiliar with the particular surroundings have to embark on a lengthy quest for information as well as familiarise themselves with the local information system. Given both the diversity and the total or partial lack of direction signing systems at or near traffic junctions, a uniform system in terms of both static and dynamic travel information should be established; one system that brings clarity to all parties (managers, public transport companies and travellers) and focuses on the processing of information, the time required to process it and the placing of signs and information columns along vehicle and pedestrian routes. Key to this project are the minimum conditions direction signs and information panels must meet in terms of layout (e.g. symbols, font), colour use and amount of information needed in order to ensure that the traveller’s length of stay in the mobility chain is minimised. At traffic junctions, drivers and public transport users must be able to easily find the information they need to know where they are and continue on their way. A traffic and travel information system is only efficient if those for whom it is intended understand how to use it. Consequently, the design of information systems should take into account both cognitive and ergonomic aspects and focus on both the limitations of individuals and the system’s comprehensibility.
