Samenvatting

This paper includes a discussion of the practical approach employed by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) in determining adequate corner sight distance. As discussed in detail, this procedure was developed through observations of actual motorist behaviour. The discussion also includes the introduction of the traffic engineering measures currently employed by NYCDOT for improving corner sight distance. Each measure will be outlined, with emphasis on its potential impacts on the urban environment. (A)
