This is a paper which merits discussion of "Head Protection Offered by Automobile Sun Visors" (See IRRD 857296) well beyond the specific results presented. It is one example of a component test, of which there could be many, for assessing the interior crash performance of all of the various structures which make up the passenger compartment. For a number of years, there has been debate on the relative merits of specifying vehicle crash performance either through a whole system performance (or global) test in which the outputs from an instrumented dummy in a complete vehicle crash test are the criteria for good design, for instance the new side impact standard FMVSS 214, or, through component tests as specified in the first generation of Federal Standards of 1968.
