Distances between bus stops effect travel times on door-to-door journeys: if stops are close together, little time is spent on walking to and from the bus but riding time is increased through frequent halts en route; conversely if stops are further apart, the bus service is speeded up and riding time reduced but walking time is increased. "Optimal" distances (minimizing mean travel time) are given based upon frequency distribution of door-to-door journeys; relative cruising speed of the bus compared with walking speed; stopping (time required by bus per stop).
