This paper first describes the problems caused by the intensive road transport of goods in urban areas. These problems include economical and environmental problems which can affect the liveability of an urban area. In the study 'The transport of goods in urban areas of the future' the researchers use the so-called 'transport matrix'. In the description of the actual transport system and the possible developments, attention is given to 'transport demand', 'transport supply' and 'traffic and infrastructure'. In addition a description of developments relevant in external influences is given. These external influences include society, economy, demography, business logistics and the structure of urban areas. This paper ends with a description of the method used for the development of new transport systems.
