This paper begins with a discussion on the theme safety barriers: deformability and rigidity. It is shown that today¦s system may have failed in fulfilling its objects. Reasons for such failures are put forward together with some recommendations for improvement. Following a presentation of the German Standards for Road Restraint Systems (RAL-RG 620 resp. TL-SP and the German Installation Standard the paper presents topics for discussion such as guard rails in the median, terminals, distance between posts and concrete barriers. Finally, new tendencies in Europe are reviewed.
