The amount of hit and run driving has increased in the Netherlands during recent years proportionally even more than the number of cars. Hit and run driving is regulated in the Dutch traffic regulation in art. 30. Psychological backgrounds and also the environmental factors of the place of the accident, the magnitude of the damage, the holding of a driving licence, fatigue, illness, the use of alcohol and personality factors, are discussed. There are many aspects of the hit and run offence, it is a complex matter. The main conclusions from this research are (1) women are not more involved in hit and run driving than men (2) drivers over 41 years old are more frequently hit and run drivers than younger persons (3) hit and run drivers are mostly also registered for other offences and (4) hit and run driving is often done while under the influence of alcohol.
