Samenvatting

During the last 15 years the number of fatalities in UK drink-drive accidents has fallen by two-thirds due to a mixture of increased enforcement, tougher penalties and publicity campaigns. An explanation of a drink-drive accident is given. The alcohol test limits applying in the United Kingdom are given and the sources of data on drinking and driving are described together with an assessment of their reliability. The characteristics of drink-drive accidents are examined and a summary is given of the policies that have led to their reduction. The most recent publicity campaigns are described with particular emphasis on the attempts to target them at specific types of driver to make maximum use of casualty reduction potentials. An analysis is made of the road user groups involved in drink-drive accidents. It was found that people in the 20 to 29 age group had the most accidents.
