Samenvatting

This article examines the subject of drinking and driving by firstly explaining what a drink-drive accident is. It then sets out the alcohol test limits which apply in the United Kingdom and this is followed by a description of the sources of data on drinking and driving and an assessment of the reliability of these data. The characteristics of drink-drive accidents are examined and the policies which have contributed to the reduction in drink-drive accidents are summarised. The more recent publicity campaigns are described with particular emphasis on the problem of targeting the campaigns at specific types of driver to maximise their effectiveness in terms of casualty reduction potential. ally the article concludes with an analysis of the road user groups involved in drink-drive accidents.
