Samenvatting

This paper discusses the problem of drunkenness of middle aged drivers with regard to their being the potential cause of a traffic accident. The most important reason for recognising chronic alcohol abuse is that a driver who cannot control his drinking cannot control his drinking and driving. Simple legal penalties such as imprisonment or suspension of driving licence do not by themselves solve the problem. Until the driver can demonstrate that his drinking is under control there is little sense in restoring his driving licence.
