Banning alcohol sales is a common method of restricting alcohol consumption and of reducing the deleterious effects of excessive drinking, such as driving under the influence (DUI). The city of Athens, Georgia, partially lifted a complete Sunday sales ban. An examination of the incidence of DUIs for each day of the week for one year prior to and one year following the sales ban did not find a statistically significant increase in DUIs. The results suggest that allowing limited alcohol consumption (e.g., during meals in restaurants) may be undertaken without increasing alcohol impaired driving. (Author/publisher)
