Samenvatting

The study objectives were to measure pedestrian and driver knowledge of proper pedestrian/motorist interaction and to determine the degree to which the general public understands the traffic control devices established for safe interaction of vehicles and pedestrians. A questionnaire was developed to determine the knowledge of drivers and pedestrians regarding the laws and traffic control devices regulating their interactions. The questionnaires were distributed through driver license examination stations in the 48 contiguous states. There were 3,560 completed questionnaires from state driver license examination stations. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) also participated in this study. There were 1,222 completed questionnaires from the AARP. The study found significant lack of knowledge on the part of the respondents on several pedestrian safety issues. (A)
