Samenvatting

A Leeds based organisation, Road Skills, uses an experimental approach to teach qualified HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicles) drivers better driving techniques that have been shown to increase safety and reduce fuel consumption. The instruction of driving skills is expanded to include advanced defensive driving techniques and drivers are encouraged to work out for themselves where and how they might improve their skills. In many cases, management need to be aware of their demands on their drivers, and they should be prepared to experiment with the techniques they are using to improve driver's skills. If drivers attain a certain standard whilst at the centre, they qualify for a Road Skills certificate which exists at two levels - elementary advanced or advanced. Training can take place whilst the driver is out on delivery runs, it continues between collections and deliveries so that the operator does not lose business whilst the driver is being taught.
