Samenvatting

The current extent and nature of driver training and education currently being delivered in post-primary schools in Ireland was investigated using questionnaires. Replies were obtained from 743 schools, with a further questionnaire sent to those schools with a driver education course. This education was aimed primarily at increasing safety on the roads, followed by improving road skills and developing general life skills (such as taking responsibility). The courses were not aimed at teaching children to drive. Course content was devised mainly by driving school instructors (83% of schools). In the remaining schools except one with police involvement, the teachers were responsible for course content. 50% of schools did not use the Staying Alive National Safety Council Course. 34% of schools included a Think Awareness course designed for transition year students and including behind-the-wheel driving (not on public roads) and classroom tuition. About half the schools delivered hands-on vehicle control training on an individual basis and about half in groups. 7% of schools imposed criteria for participation based on academic and behavioural criteria, and ownership of a provisional licence. 13% of schools excluded children with learning or physical disabilities. The majority of schemes were put in place because of teachers' concerns for student road safety. Cost of courses was an issue for 76% of schools, space for 43% and insurance provision for 32%. 90% of schools considered that a post-primary module of driver education for all students would be desirable. A comparison of similar courses and approaches to driver training in Europe is provided. For the covering abstract see ITRD E124157.
