Samenvatting

The psychological concept of expectancy has been applied to driver behaviour, and its significance is examined in the operation of the traffic system. Expectancy is defined as a readiness to respond to driving tasks in a certain way, and a persistence to continue with it. A block diagram for flow analysis of the driving task is presented. The perceptual process is also analysed, and an inventory of traffic system factors is given which can be used by traffic engineers in road design.
