Samenvatting

At the Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen mbH Aachen (fka), the submicroscopic traffic simulation program PELOPS (Program for the drvelopment of Longitudinal micrOscopic traffic Processes in a System relevant environment) was developed in co-operation with BMW AG. It simulates the traffic flow on motorways with a specific view on vehicle affairs. One application for PELOPS was the assessment of ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) systems inside the PROMETHEUS program and the German research project MoTiV (Mobilitat und Transport im intermodalen Verkehr). A new research period extends the use about the functionality to road networks. This requires an extension of PELOPS with mainly two focal points. Firstly the simulation of road networks requires the modelling of intersections and therewith the driving behavior at intersections. Secondly the simulation of advanced driver assistance systems such as lane change assistants requires extremely realistic models from the driver's point of view. The paper gives detailed information about the simulation techniques especially about the driver model concerning lane change behavior. Here a model is presented that due to its open structure is not restricted to indicated situations. Moreover by introducing a contentedness value about the course of drive, the temporal development flows in when the driver desires to change lanes. A further characteristic consists in considering the reaction of the surrounding traffic when the driver signals a lane change maneuver at the moment when he wants to change lanes. By meeting the mentioned requirements, the model presented here significantly differs from known lane change models. The basis for the model development is the research of real lane changes by means of a test vehicle that is equipped with four sensors. These sensors detect distances and differential speeds.
