The aim of the SAVE project is to diminish the severe consequences of road drivers impairments. The term "driver impairment" encompasses all the situations in which the driver's alertness is diminished, and therefore when the driving task cannot be maintained at an adequate level of performance. It is a consequence of stress, fatigue, alcohol abuse, medication, inattention, effects of various diseases. The objective of this report is the preliminary evaluation of users' needs regarding driving aids, especially regarding the monitoring of drivers' alertness and automatic driving in emergency situations. The report is structured in the following manner. first there is a brief synopsis of SAVE concepts, followed by a presentation of the main objectives of user needs and public acceptance analysis (WP3), in which certain aspects of the SAVE system traffic safety related issues (WP4) are added, as far as they are relevant to potential SAVE user needs.
