The paper begins with a brief presentation of operating characteristics and design of driving simulators together with some possible future utilisation in the training sector. A discussion on how simulators could be used to overcome the limitations of the present driver training systems reaches the following conclusions: (1) traffic situations can be manipulated in driving simulators; (2) a bridge between the classroom and situations one could meet in real traffic could be thrown; (3) students could be faced with rare and dangerous situations in a planned manner; and (4) a driving simulator could enable methodical repetitions of more complex actions. Following this the paper ends with putting forward some requirements making a distinction between technical and didactic requirements on the driving simulators to be used for driver training.
