Samenvatting

Recent analyses carried out by Maycock et al (1991) have shown that both age and experience contribute to the reduction in accident liability which occurs with passing time and that, in very general terms, the magnitude of the two effects is about equal. It is also important to identify those factors which are associated with better accident rates during this period when drivers appear to be at their most vulnerable in order that countermeasures may be designed with the aim of reducing the high accident rates of this group. There are many measures which might be taken, including removing the risk to drivers by restriction, but the papers which follow examine the contribution which training can make in better preparing young, novice and qualified drivers for the risks they will face on the road. Part 1 of this paper deals with work relating to learner and novice drivers, while part 2 briefly discusses advanced driver training and testing and further addresses the age/experience issue.
