The objective of this study was to investigate drivers' ability to acquire in-car information displayed in the vertical periphery during driving. Two simple displays were installed in a simulator car in the upper edge of the windscreen, one display stationary and the other moving. The subjects' task was to detect and identify the presented information via peripheral vision as quickly as possible. Eye movements were recorded during the test. Results of the study clearly show that drivers are able to acquire peripheral in-car information without shifting the focus of attention from the forward field of view. However, the acquisition process is influenced by type of information, display position and level of cognitive load. A careful design of the presentation of the information is necessary for quick and accurate acquisition of information via peripheral vision. (A0
