Drivers' attitudes to information from Variable Message Signs (VMS) implemented in London has been investigated through the CLEOPATRA project, part of the European Commission's Telematics Applications Fourth Framework Programme. This paper reports on an initial study conducted in London to determine drivers' opinions about, and requirements for, VMS information. One thousand questionnaires were distributed to drivers heading towards the city on a major radial, during the morning peak. Results indicate that drivers can successfully interpret most of the information provided, that it is viewed as being quite useful and that appropriate advance warning of problems can potentially induce a change in travel behaviour. Drivers would welcome an expansion of the system and provision of more up to date information.
