The statistics for road accidents in Dongying city in China between 1993 and 1995 are examined and the role played by alcohol identified. The figures are examined in terms of profession of the casualty, type of vehicle, age, weather conditions, time of year, locality and amount of drink consumed. Many accidents are ascribed to peasants unused to city roads and to the effects of alcohol. The author concludes that traffic laws should be tightened up, the advertising of alcohol limited and the amount of time taken to train a driver increased.
