Samenvatting

The central objective of the GIDS (Generic Intelligent Driver Support) project is to design an integrated driver support system which takes account of driver needs and limitations over a broad spectrum of task components. In this context the goal of the behavioral research in GIDS is to deliver a set of basic and functional recommendations for GIDS. Driver support on the level of navigation, manoeuvring and vehicle control is considered in an interrelated way. Rather than focusing on the separate functioning of these support components GIDS integrates information from all three levels, thus indicating what items to present to the driver, what to combine or suppress, what level of urgency is required, what functions to allocate to the driver or - in the case of the driver instruction - what instruction should be given to the driver. This paper presents the first results of the behavioral studies in GIDS and its consequences for the design of the GIDS prototype. The behavioral studies focused on two issues i.e. the description of baseline behaviour and the analysis of effects of particular support functions. The results of the baseline studies give a description of unsupported behaviour, e.g. the information processing and behavioral characteristics of unsupported driving. These data will serve as a reference in the GIDS system to indicate whether and how a supportive action is needed. The results of simulation and instrumented car studies on the effects of supportive actions are used to indicate the actual effects of a particular type of support at a particular moment. From this preliminary evaluation studies recommendations are derived as to the support characteristics of GIDS. This leads to specific requirements for the driver-vehicle interface and the design of the GIDS dialogue controller and analyst-planner.
