Samenvatting

Driver error remains the leading cause of highway crashes. Through the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI), the Department of Transportation hopes to reduce crashes by helping drivers avoid hazardous mistakes. IVI aims to accelerate the development and commercialization of vehicle-based driver assistance products that will warn drivers of dangerous situations, recommend actions, and even assume partial control of vehicles to avoid collisions. This booklet describes 8 programs to counteract 8 major problem areas in highway safety. These programs are carried out on four vehicle platforms - light vehicles, commercial vehicles, transit vehicles and specialty vehicles. The 8 problem/program areas include: rear-end collision avoidance, lane change and merge collision avoidance, road departure collision avoidance, intersection collision avoidance, vision enhancement, vehicle stability, driver condition warning, and safety impacting services.
