Driving skills, safety, and aggressive driving.

This paper reviewed six studies using the Driver Skill Inventory (DSI). The perceptual-motor and safety skill scales proved to be reliable and the two factor structure seemed to be robust. Correlational studies showed that perceptual-motor skills correlated positively with life-time mileage, number of accidents per mileage and driving speed. Safety skills correlated negatively with accidents and speed. A theoretical mediator model of aggressive driving behaviour and safety skills was introduced. In addition, two empirical applications of the model were presented. These models indicate that safety skills partly mediate the effects of general aggressiveness and driving anger on aggressive driver behaviour. (A)
