The dialect word dwam means a "state of inattention"; this is a more accurate description of the phenomenon which has been called "highway hypnosis" and "driver fatigue"; the acronym DWAM (Driving Without Attention Mode) is therefore be used to describe the state of loss- of- awareness whilst driving. Recommendations for research in this area are presented.
