In late 2001 and early 2002, Queensland Transport commissioned Market and Communications Research (MCR) to investigate the issue of drug driving in Queensland. The aim of the research was to update Queensland Transport's existing information base on Queensland drivers' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in relation to driving under the influence of prescription, over the counter and illicit drugs. The research was in two phases. Phase one, the qualitative component, involved conducting twelve focus groups in Brisbane and a selection of regional centres. The results from the focus groups informed the structure and wording of a questionnaire, administered over the phone to a sample of 570 Queensland drivers, that made up the second (quantitative) phase of the research. Findings from this research have contributed to providing current profiles of the at risk target groups, the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of Queensland drivers in relation to drug driving, and public education needs.
