Samenvatting

In 1995, Japan started developing DSRC (dedicated short range communication) standards (5.8GHz, Active system) targeted for ETC (electronic toll collection) systems for all over Japan. The first Japanese DSRC standard is ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses) STD T-55, which has been introduced for ETC systems in Japan. After standardising ARIB STD T-55, Japan has started developing the next generation DSRC standards for multiple ITS applications. The new standards will have much faster data transmission than the first generation to cover a variety of ITS applications including such as internet downloading. In international standardisation, Japan has been actively contributing both for ISO/TC204/WG15 and ITU-R/SG8/WP8A. In Asia-Pacific region, Japan is involved in ASTAP (Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Standardisation Organisation). The ETC systems in Japan are on trial in the greater Tokyo area from April 2000. The systems will be installed all over Japan by 2002. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
