The objective of this paper is to present the dual belt pretension as a means to improve occupant protection in frontal impact. Findings from accident investigations showed reduction of injury frequency for belted occupants in general as a result of improvements in vehicle structure and occupant restraint systems. There is however still a concern as regards the protection of abdomen and lower legs. Abdominal protection, thanks to anti submarining devices, shows some improvements. As regards lower leg, despite a considerable reduction of intrusion in the footwell area, the severity and nature of injuries requires understanding and optimised solutions. It is believed that dual pretension combined with anti submarining system in the seat will have a potential to address these injuries.
