Samenvatting

A preliminary feasibility study of Dual-use of LED (Light Emitting Diodes), concurrent use of LED for illuminations and communications, has been carried out in co-operation with the University of Hong Kong and Matsushita Information Systems. LEDs have capabilities as communication devices by fast switching of LEDs and modulation of the visible light waves. Therefore, traffic signals, message boards and other devices can be dual-used both for illumination and communication. The feasibility of this approach should be examined for the development of new ITS applications. As a preliminary feasibility study, a laboratory experiment has been being conducted, and the results show the low bit error rate in the communication between LED transmitter and light sensor receiver. Furthermore, a field testing of specific applications and extended studies of potential applications are being planned for the next phase of this project.
