The authors review the background and evolution of dummies from a supportive role to the forefront of automotive safety testing technology that has occurred largely as a result of federal rule making relative to FMVSS 208. The paper covers the features, use and variability of the GM Hybrid II Dummy and answers questions about its adequacy for evaluating occupant restraint systems.
