The Dunlap's Creek Bridge of Brownsville, Pennsylvania, was the first all metal bridge constructed in the United States. It is located about 25 mi south of Pittsburgh near the Route 40 crossing of the Monongahela River. Designed by Captain Richard Delafield of the Corps of Engineers, it was constructed by ironmaster and steam engine builder John Snowden. Unobtrusively, this unstrengthened bridge continues to carry daily traffic and full legal loads. Although obscure and generally unheralded, it stands today after 150 years of service, an enduring symbol of American endeavour.
