This paper reviews the effects of The Netherlands strategic environmental policies. The provisions of the National Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP I) are outlined and progress so far discussed. The areas of a) investment in public transport; b) fiscal and price measures; c) land use planning; d) integrated approaches to areas such as Schiphol Airport; e) traffic reduction measures by companies and public bodies and f) the establishment of regional transportation planning bodies are discussed. Changes made by the NEPP II published in 1993 are described. These include a tightening up of emissions targets, the introduction of a peak hour toll and the setting of targets not previously included.
