Before examining the aims and design of motorway control and signalling system in detail, the need for such a system is summarized. The main reasons are: (1) the load on motorways is steadily increasing, (2) few new roads or road widening schemes can be expected in the immediate future, so the capacity of the current network must be utilized to the full, and (3) unforeseen circumstances often cause major accidents. The introduction of motorway control and signalling system is aimed at: (1) a better utilization of the existing capacity, (2) greater safety, (3) making the job of the police and the authorities responsible for the roads easier, and (4) collecting traffic data. Two motorway control and signalling systems are being developed simultaneously. The components of the system, detector loops, transmission cables, matrix signals, detector stations, outstations, central processor, traffic programs, maintenance work, changeable message signs, and operation are presented.
