The Dutch Motorway Control & Signalling System (MCSS originally, nowadays called Motorway Traffic Management system (MTM) was put in operation for the first time at the end of 1981 on a relatively small stretch of motorway (12 km) between The Hague and Rotterdam. Today this system covers 981 (from a total lenght of about 2100 kilometers) including 8 tunnels. A total of five control centres are in operation. The paper describes the original system concept and how, from the practical experience with the system, this basic concept has gradually changed into the system it is today. Finally a brief overview of future plans is given. (Author/publisher)
