Dynamic lane marking (DLM) is a recent term in the traffic engineering language. Intuitively it conjures thoughts of changeable lane markings or lines, changeable lane control systems and other definitions. This paper will cover the practical application of DLM systems in Australasia and overseas. It will demonstrate the technical capabilities and nuances of the on-road and off-road equipment. The paper will discuss current examples of DLM in the form of mini-case studies and will outline the range of areas and current projects where DLM systems are currently in the design stage or under serious consideration. The overriding philosophy of not paving the planet with roads, but making better utilisation of the existing road space available is driving the expansion of DLM. Hard shoulder running or using the emergency stopping lane during peak periods is a form of dynamic lane marking as is contra-flow lane operation.
