In 1997, SYTRAL (Lyons' Transport Authority), requested assistance from SEMALY (Public Transport Consultant) for the installation of a Dynamic Passenger Information System for the existing bus transit system of the city. Specifications took into consideration all of the operational aspects required by SLTC (Lyons' Public Transit Operator). At bus stops, passengers are informed by display signs of such things as estimated waiting times and text messages. Passengers are also informed by a public address system of bus locations, destinations and connections. 500 bus stops are equipped with LCD displays and 60 additional display units are to be fitted at the interchange centres. About 1000 buses and 9 bus depots will also be equipped with this system. The first fully equipped bus line will begin service at end of the Summer of 2000. This project is one of the most ambitious passenger information systems for public transport in Europe. Close co-operation between SYTRAL and the Greater Lyons Urban Area Public Authorities was required for its realisation.
