The dynamic situation of education transport in the UK and the innovative solutions developed by Metro (West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive).

The Yellow Bus scheme in West Yorkshire is the first of its type to receive capital funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) in the UK. A capital sum of £18.7m was awarded for the purchase of 150 Yellow Buses for school journeys. The background to the provision of school transport in West Yorkshire is outlined. The problems include congestion at the school gates, high levels of traffic congestion during scholl term times, an increasing car mode share for travel to and from school, and social exclusion for those within rural communities. The Yellow Bus Vision was developed by Metro in 2000 to reduce car dependence and encourage bus use into adult life. The phased approach to education transport from Metro's Vision is described. A market research study was commissioned to determine the effectiveness of the pilot schemes and whether a similar approach could be transferred to other schools. The new fleet of Yellow Buses will provide home to school transport for pupils in 300 schools and must be available to all schools in West Yorkshire outside peak hours.
