Samenvatting

The threshold of warning in a Collision Avoidance System (CAS) built in developed countries is probably not suitable for applying in developing countries. The investigation on hazardous car-following and lane-changing behaviour microscopically is necessary to determine the safety gap or headway between the vehicles. The driving behaviour in Taiwan seems to be very aggressive. Therefore, this study conducted a field survey to analyze the car-following and lane-changing behaviour in Taiwan. Through analyzing the drivers' braking maneuvers, the possible reactions to hazardous car-following behaviour is identified, and then, the warning threshold for dangerous lane changing can be found out by analyzing the relation between vehicles' relative speeds and gaps. Through statistical analyses, scenarios for safety headways are generated. A procedure involving the warning threshold created in the study can be inputted into a simulation system to investigate the traffic risk; and then, applied to improve the effects of CAS system is investigated afterward.
