The Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management plans to dynamically adjust the amount of road lighting depending on the prevailing conditions. In all circumstances a sufficient amount of road lighting will be provided, given traffic and weather conditions, whereas the road will not be unnecessarily highly lit. Under contract with the Ministry's Transport Research Centre, a field test is carried out to evaluate the effect of such dynamic road lighting in traffic behaviour and road safety. First on the basis of an analysis of the road scene a temporary switching schedule was developed. This switching schedule was used in the field test. This report describes the preliminary results of the evaluation of the field test. (A)
