This short article reviews the latest EEC draft legislation regarding the design of easily accessible buses (Document III/4076/90-ENRev 2). There is still a general requirement within the main part of the directive to provide handrails between the entrance door, and seats designated for the handicapped. There is a new requirement forthe provision, opposite the rear service door, of a space and special handrails for a wheelchair. However, no level access is provided for the wheelchair to reach this designated space. The rest of the requirements for "technical devices for facilitating access to buses"are relegated to an appendix, and use is optional. However if any of the options listed therein are chosen then these regulations will apply. These include clearly marked controls, and the operation of and/or the dimensions for kneeling systems, lifts, and ramps.
